Surface Study Trio

Originally conceived as a means to reduce the weight of my vessels, marking the inception of a new body of work, I began carving into the surface, creating patterns as I progressed.
“Gradually, I realized that this carving process and style had subconsciously evolved from the rich heritage of Portuguese traditional tile works, following my recent journey to Portugal. I found myself captivated by the intricate ridges where colors converge on the tiles.”
While traditional methods involve pressing clay into molds, I opted for a different approach. I began to mimic the effects I admired by carving into the surface, sculpting shapes, and outlining areas through the careful removal of clay. Thus, uniform and factory-made tiles became three-dimensional; they now adorn the surfaces of my vessels. I rely on a simple carving tool to delve deeper into my themes, which often explore motifs of the human body and historical narratives. Through this process, I simultaneously subtract and unite lines, further developing and enhancing my imagination.
