Bio
Kiki Liu is a Chinese multidisciplinary artist working with ceramics, fiber, design, and photography, currently based in Los Angeles, California.
Liu’s artistic journey is deeply influenced by her upbringing in both traditional Chinese and Western cultures. This duality has shaped her appreciation for artistic expression and physical movement, forming the foundation of her early explorations in silhouette, shape, and process. Over time, her work has evolved to explore themes of belonging and home-making, expressed through both utilitarian objects and purely sculptural forms. These pieces speak to the idea of transforming temporary spaces into places of warmth and familiarity—where art-making becomes a sanctuary amidst the uncertainties of immigration and distance from family. Existing between two worlds, she navigates their contrasts while longing to inhabit both simultaneously.
Through her practice, Liu transforms the challenges of constant movement into reflections on security and connection, inviting viewers to engage with the intersections of personal identity and artistic expression. She seeks to challenge preconceived notions about both artists and art, encouraging a breakdown of barriers between disciplines. Navigating shifting geographies and legal statuses, her work meditates on movement and stability, where making becomes an act of grounding and continuity. Her pieces invite an intimate dialogue on the tensions between impermanence and security, distance and closeness, function and sentiment.
