1x8x135 Statement
As a ceramics artist, my daily practice centers around the essential act of creating with my hands. Working with clay, designing, and ex"1x8x135" relates to the exhibition concept by uniting disparate ideas through fired ceramics, marked by my unique body movements and the impressions of my feet. The delicate slab captures fleeting imprints, fusing strength and vitality. My fascination lies in the convergence of ceramics with my dedication to training, sculpting a realm between transience and eternity. This exploration contrasts ephemeral moments with ceramics' enduring nature. The fired ceramics encapsulate my artistic growth and physical strength; their marks endure as testaments. This harmony between clay's fragility and the rawness of weightlifting deepens my understanding of creation's duality.
In this multimedia piece, my body shapes the imprint, symbolizing strength gained from overcoming body image struggles. I employ my own physical body as a conduit for the force of the weight, shaping the imprint with deliberate intention and meaning. This approach underscores the strength I derive from my body, a resilience cultivated through overcoming past struggles with societal standards for beauty and body.
Safely squatting on clay presents a challenge due to potential injury. Opting for 135 lbs, instead of my maximum weight, emphasizes my consideration for safety. This choice, alongside the significance of 8 repetitions, symbolizes an initial milestone and achievement widely recognized within the weightlifting community.
To authentically capture this transformative process, I recorded the work on video—an integral component of my work. The documentation of progress is strongly encouraged in both worlds, making it a fitting addition to this work. The video contextualizes the essence of the slab and insights into my training regimen, supplementing and finalizing the creation of "1x8x135". This process conceptualizes and realizes the routine work into material form. Each motion transcends physicality, embodying practice and strength, prompting contemplation on fragility and timeless expressions.
