Approximate Orbit

Kiki Liu’s solo exhibition explores the search for home in a life shaped by movement. Through ceramics and textiles, she transforms the uncertainty of temporary living into grounding and belonging, crafting functional objects—lamps, vases, quilts, containers—that make impermanence feel like home.

For nearly a decade, Liu navigated life in the US on temporary visas, each renewal dictating where she could stay. With her family an ocean away, she built homes with the knowledge that she might have to leave them. In this drifting, repetition became refuge—her hands shaping stability where permanence was uncertain.

The title Approximate Orbit borrows from astronomy, describing a body’s shifting yet steady relationship to its companions. Likewise, Liu’s sense of security is constantly recalibrated by external forces, yet her practice remains a tether. The Chinese character , meaning “togetherness,” echoes this theme—this exhibition is not only hers, but a shared experience with curators, collaborators, and all who have found home in motion.

Kiki Liu
